We reviewed 81 nasolacrimal systems of 71 patients under 4 years of age. The patients were divided into three groups according to the age: 0-12 months, 13-24 months and 25-48 months. Tc99 dacriosintigraphy was carried out to determine the localisation of obstruction in all patients. Twenty nine nasolacrimal systems in the first group underwent massage plus topical antibiotics treatment (MAT), 28 nasolacrimal systems in second group and 24 nasolacrimal systems in the third group underwent first MAT and then probing. The success rates of MAT in the first, the second and the third group were 82.7 %, 42.8 % and 25 % respectively. Probing was not performed in the first group, and the success rates in the second and the third group were 93.7% and 81.2% respectively. MAT is enough for the patients under 12 months of age. Probing has higher success rate in the patients between 13 and 24 months than that in MAT, however MAT can be performed in a short time before probing. Probing seems to be effective treatment in the patients between 25 and 48 months of age. Keywords: Nasolacrimal duct obstruction,
