Fifty eyes of thirty-five patients with primary pterygia and fifty eyes of twenty-five controls were evaluated, using computed corneal topography (EyeSys, ver.2.1). Results of pterygium groups were compared to control groups using statistical methods. Refractive powers of all points of pterygium group were higher than those of corresponding points of control group. Nasal quadrant was flatter than temporal quadrant and inferior quadrant was flatter than superior quadrant in all zones in both groups, the differences being higher in pterygium group than control group. Mean Simulated K value (in the 3 mm zon) was 0.38±0.38 D (-0.56/1.55) in the control group and 0.77±0.80 D (-0.45/4.06) in the pterygium group. We did not find any correlation between the maximum horizontal extension of the pterygia and mean simulated K values in 3mm zones. The area of pterygium was flatter than other areas of cornea with pterygium. Corneas with pterygium were found steeper than normal corneas. The fact that cornea was also steep in small pterygia made us consider that steepness of cornea was able to be a predisposing factor for pterygium. Keywords: Pterygium, Corneal topographyTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 1999, 8:229-234
