Ereğli Devlet Hastanesi Göz Kliniği Uzmanı, ZONGULDAK***** Op.Dr., Bandırma Devlet Hastanesi Göz Kliniği Uzmanı, BALIKESİR We included 83 eyes of 78 patients on which we performed extracapsular cataract extraction and posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in Ankara Numune Hospital 3rd Eye Clinic between 1993 and 1995 in this study to evaluate the factors effecting visual prognosis. Of these, 41 were male and 37 were female. Their ages were between 35 and 86 (mean 63.15±10.40).
The evaluations were performed at least 2 months after the operation. The rate of acquiring vision 0.5 or more was 72.3% and 77.3% when the secondary pathologies decreasing vision were excluded.
The primary pathologies decreasing vision were astigmatism (44.6%), pigmentation over the IOL (3.6%), cystoid macular edema (6.0%), IOL decentralization (1.2%), posterior capsular opacity (3.6%), intraocular pressure rise (1.2%) and fibrillar membrane over the IOL (1.2%).
The other factors affecting visual prognosis were increasing age, female sex, the short follow-up time and corneal incision. Keywords: Cataract surgery, Visual prognosisTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 1999, 8:281-286
