Göz Kliniği, Şefi, ANKARA To investigate the risk factors that increase intraoperative complications in patients with pseudoexfoliation (PSX) that underwent extracapsular cataract surgery. In this study, 200 consecutive patients with PSX syndrome who had extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) between 1993-1997 have been evaluated retrospectively. Patients who had intraoperative complications constituted group A and those who had uneventful surgery constituted group B. Risk factors that may increase intraoperative complications included; age, sex, type of cataract, experience of surgeon (resident, general ophthalmologist, cataract surgeon), operated eye (right-left), glaucoma and need for sector iridectomy during surgery. Group A and B were compared to find out the effectiveness of risk factors by using multiple logistic regression analysis. Of 200 patients with PSX that underwent ECCE 12 (6 %) had posterior capsular rupture, 10 (5%) had zonular dialysis and 8 (4%) had vitreous loss. In patients with PSX, experience of the surgeon (p<0.005) and type of cataract (p<0.05) were two significant risk factors for intraoperative complications. Patients with pseudoexfoliation and white cataracts should be operated by experienced surgeons as they carry a high risk for intraoperative complications for cataract surgery. Keywords: Pseudoexfoliation, Cataract surgery,
