Purpose: In this study, symptoms and clinical findings and their incidence in ocular rosacea and the effect of doxycycline therapy on these symptoms and findings were studied.
Materials and Methods: The patients diagnosed as acne rosacea clinically and histopathologically were examined for ocular rosacea. Ocular symptoms and biomicroscopy findings were recorded in patients having ocular rosacea. The patients were treated with doxycycline 100 mg/day for six weeks orally. Ocular symptoms and biomicroscopy findings were recorded again at the end of treatment, and the symptoms and the findings before and after treatment were compared statistically.
Results: The most frequent ocular symptoms were itching (80%), irritation (68%), red eye (68%), burning sensation(64%), and photophobia (60%). The most frequent ocular findings were meibomitis (92%), telengiectasis (88%), blepharitis (84%), superficial punctate keratopathy (72%), and hyperemia (60%). Statistically significant relief in rosacea patients were observed for itching, burning, and red eye symptoms after doxycycline treatment (Mc Nemar Test, p< 0,05), but no relief was observed for ocular irritation, photophobia, foreign body sensation, tearing and pain (p>0,05).
Statistically significant clinical improvement for the findings of blepharitis, meibomitis, telengiectasia was observed after doxycycline therapy (Mc Nemar Test, p<0,05), but there was no improvement for superficial punctate keratitis, hyperemia, hordeolum, and chalazion (p>0,05).
Conclusion: Because of the higher ocular involvement rate than estimated, rosacea patients should be followed by both ophthalmologist and dermatologist and we think that careful ocular history and examination are necessary for these patients. The results obtained with doxycycline therapy for 6 weeks show that early diagnosis and treatment are important in rosacea.
