Histopathology shows vasculitis of small vessels and capillaries with fibrinoid necrosis. Ocular manifestations can be seen during the relapses. SLE can involve the orbit (eye socket) and it can produce inflammatory lesions of the eyelids. It may even involve the optic nerve connections from the eye to the brain. The clinical manifestations of SLE, result from massive and complex B- cell overactivity leading to production of a diverse range of autoantibodies, immune complexes, and to activation of complement with a defect in T-cell immunoregulation. Antiphos-pholipid antibody syndrom and drugs used for treatment of SLE can lead to ocular pathologies. In this overview clinical signs, diagnosis criteria, ocular manifestations, therapy and side effects of the therapy of SLE has been gathered. Keywords: Systemic lupus erythematosus, eyeTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2000, 9:140-148
