Materials and Methods: Records of 73 patients with Duane's retraction syndrome from 1990 to 1998 were evaluated retrospectively.
Results: The incidence of this syndrome in the population of strabismic patients was 1.1%. There were 34 (47%) males and 39 (53%) females. Eighty-nine percent of the patients were unilaterally affected. Left eye preponderance (75%) was significant and 8 cases (11%) were bilateral. Clinical type was designated according to Ahluwalia's classification. Most patients had esotropia (44 %) in primary position. The most common form was type IA (42%) and second was type IC (33%). Thirteen patients (18%) had amblyopia. The number of patients with a family history was 3 (4%). A compensating head turn was found in 41 (57%) of the cases. Five-seven millimeters recessions were performed on 9 patients and the surgery resulted in a decreased head turn in all cases.
Conclusion: In this syndrome that has been estimated to 1-4 % of patients with strabismus, the clinical observations made on 73 patients are presented. Keywords: Duane's retraction syndrome, Head turn,
