Materials and Methods: Study group has consisted of the 376 students of a primary school in Elazığ Provincial Centre. We recorded children's demographic features, ophthalmic history, and visual acuity. Corrected visual acuity £0.8 in the absence of an organic problem were accepted as amblyopia. Bilateral hypermetropia>2.0 D, astigmatism>1.50 D, anisometropia>1.0 D and all manifest deviations, alone or along with refractive errors, were evaluated as amblyogenic. Results were converted to tables with spsswin 6.0 and given as per cent values. Fisher's exact test was used for evaluating the effects of the relationship among parents to the prevalence of the amblyopia.
Results and Conclusion: 40(10.6%) children had visual acuity £0.8. 50(13.3%) of the children had refractive errors, 11(3%) were with amblyogenic ones. 9(2.4%) children had strabismus; 6(1.6%) accompanying with a refractive error. Of the 8(2.1%) children having amblyopia, 4(50%) were caused by refractive errors, 1(12.5%) by strabismus and 3 (37.5%) by both refractive errors and strabismus. The prevalence of amblyopia in the groups with and without a relationship among their parents were 3.8% and 1.3% respectively (p>0.05). Strikingly, 301 children (80.1%) were not experienced an ocular examination before, and 75% of the children with initial visual acuity £0.8 reached 1.0 acuity with correction. These results emphasise the need for pre-school screening. Keywords: amblyopia, amblyogenic factors,
