A permanent and succesful surgical treatment of entropion highly depends on the level of correction of anatomical defects which causes entropion. Horizontal eyelid laxity and disinsertion of eyelid retractors are the main reasons of involutional entropion. Repair of lower lid retractors alone and with horizontal lid shortening for senile entropion were compared and results were presented.
Methods: 10 patients were treated with lower eyelid retractors repair alone (group 1) and 10 patients were treated with repair of lower eyelid retractors and horizontal eyelid shortening (group 2). In both groups, the follow-up period was between 12 and 24 months (average 18 months).
Results: Scleral show was observed in 1 of the 10 cases (%10) in the first group and entropion recurred in another patient (%10) in the fifth month following the operation. On the other hand in the second group, no recurrences or eyelid malpositions were observed.
Conclusion: Repair of lower eyelid retractors and horizontal eyelid shortening give permanent and succesful results. Besides it prevents any other possible eyelid malpositions such as persistent ectropion. Keywords: Involutional entropion, Repair of lower eyelid
