*Yrd.Doç.Dr., Harran Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Hastanesi Göz Hastalıkları AD, ŞANLIURFA Purpose: The effects of rigid gas permeable contact lenses on contrast sensitivity function in myopic and hyperopic young cases were investigated and in this regard, the contact lenses were compared with spectacle correction.
Material and Method: The contrast sensitivity values were measured by Cambridge Low Contrast Gratings Chart in 44 eyes of 22 cases (11 myopia and 11 hyperopia), who applied to the Contact Lens Department of Harran University, Eye Clinic. The values were compared with those obtained from the same patients with spectacles. Student t-test was used for the statistical analysis of the results.
Results: While the contrast sensitivity values obtained for the myopic eyes with contact lenses (mean 414.09±51.05) were significantly higher than those of the eyes with spectacles (mean 376.81±55.15) (p<0.01), there was no significant differences between the contrast sensitivity values obtained for the hyperopic eyes with contact lenses (mean 386.36±76.19) and with spectacles (mean 393.63±69.38) (p>0.05).
Conclusion: As the rigid gas permeable contact lenses magnify the size of the image on retina, and the optical failures such as spherical, chromatic aberrations and distortions are less in comparison to spectacles, they may cause higher contrast sensitivity values in myopic cases than the ones with spectacles. Keywords: Rigid gas permeable contact lens,
