Göz Kliniği, Şefi,**** Dr., Ankara Numune Hastanesi Biokimya ve Klinik Biokimya Laboratuarı, Şefi, ANKARA Lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a)) has an anti-fibrinolytic effect and may cause the occlusion of small vessels and, therefore, be a risk factor for diabetic retinopathy. Increased Lp(a) levels were reported in diabetic patients with microalbuminuria. In this study the relationship between Lp(a), microalbuminuria and diabetic retinopathy was assessed.
The patients were divided into three groups. First group had 25 patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy, second group had 25 patients with nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy and third group had 25 patients without diabetic retinopathy. The control group had 35 healthy subjects. Lp(a), urinary albumin levels and fasting blood glucose levels were measured in the patients and control group.
In the first group the number of patients with increased Lp(a) levels were not significantly higher than second group, but there was statistically significant difference between group 1 and 3 (c2=12.86, sd=3, p=0.005). There was no statistically significant difference between group 1 and 2 related to the number of patients with MA. The number of patients with MA were detected significantly lower in the third group (c2=16.68, sd=2, p=0.0002). There were no statistically significant difference between group 1, 2 and 3 according to the number of patients with high fasting blood glucose levels (c2=4.17, sd=2, p=0.125).
As a result diabetic patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy had higher serum Lp(a) levels and higher rate of microalbuminuria versus those without diabetic retinopathy. These findings suggest that Lp(a) and microalbuminuria may play a role in the mechanism leading to proliferative retinopathy. Keywords: Diabetes mellitus, Diabetic retinopathy,
