Materials and Methods: All patients seen at Adnan Menderes University, School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology were evaluated prospectively. Patients with best corrected visual acuity in either eye of poorer than 0.9, myopia greater than -3.0 diopters, or other risk factors for ocular disease such as ocular hypertension, previous ocular surgery, diabetes mellitus were excluded. All fundus abnormalities were recorded. Fundus abnormalities were classified as either lesions that were within the view of the direct ophthalmoscope or as peripheral lesions requiring a dilated examination with the indirect ophthalmoscope. Lesions were also examined by +78 diopter lens.
Results: Sixteen (10.7%) out of 150 patients were found to have fundus abnormalities. Seven (%4.6) of these lesions were considered clinically significant and 3 of them were located beyond the view of direct ophthalmoscope. 87.2% of all lesions were also detected by +78 diopter lens. The prevalance of fundus findings increased significantly with increasing patient age.
Conclusion: The prevalance of fundus abnormalities increases with age and therefore, it is concluded that especially the fundus of older patients should be examined with dilation. Keywords: Fundus examination,
