Purpose: To compare the effects of interrupted and bootlace suture techniques on corneal astigmatism in the cases with PeCCe+IOL implantation following the cataract surgery with corneal incision.
Materials and Methods: 92 eyes of 82 patients who had no other ocular and systemic pathology except cataract preoperatively underwent a planned and complication free extracapsular cataract extraction and posterior chamber lens implantation with 5 each interrupted suture by 10/0 monoflaman nylon suture and continuous closed bootlace suture technique used in 42 and 50 of the eyes, respectively, were involved in the study and the effects of the two suture techniques on postoperative corneal astigmatism were compared prospectively.
Results: The preoperative astigmatism values were measured by mean cylindirical values as 0.76±0.62 in the first group with interrupted suture and as 0.80±0.62 in the other group with continuous closed bootlace suture (p>0.1). In the postoperative first month according to the keratometric measurements although a higher astigmatism was determined in the cases sutured with the continuous closed bootlace technique in comparison with the other group no significant difference was observed between the two groups in the final postoperative astigmatism measurements (the mean cylindirical values were 1.14±0.68 and 1.21±0.70 in the first and second group, respectively, and the difference between the values of the two groups were insignificant statistically) following the removal of sutures.
Conclusion: The postoperative corneal astigmatism is especially higher in the early postoperative period and declines considerably by suture removal. Consequently, no discrepancy between the two seperate suture techniques have been determined on astigmatism.
