Göz Kliniği Şefi, Ankara Purpose: To investigate the surgical results, the factors affecting the success and the complications in patients who had external dacryocystorhinostomy and silicone tube intubation.
Methods: 53 lacrimal drainage system of 50 patients with dacryocystitis had external dacryocystorhinostomy using Dupuy-Dutemps Bourget method. 20 patients had bicanalicular silicone tube intubation because of common internal punctal stenosis, membrane, small fibrotic sac and recurrent dacryocystorhinostomy.
Results: The age of the patients range from 8 to 65 (mean:34 years), including 38 women (76%), and 12 men (24%). 42 of the patients had (79.2%) chronic dacryocystitis, 3 had (5.6%) recurrent dacryostenosis, 3 had (5.6%) mucocele, and 5 had (9.4%) common canaliculus obstruction. The success rate was 86.8% (46 eyes). 7 patients had (13.2%) recurrence, 2 patients had (3.7%) frontal sinusitis, 2 patients had (3.7%) tube migration, 3 patients (5.6%) had conjunctival irritation and 1 patient had (1.8%) tube loss. Silicon tubes were removed with a mean of 5.5 months (3-9 months).
Conclusion: External dacryocystorhinostomy is the preferred method in our clinic because of its low cost of technology and high success rate. Silicone tube intubation increases the success rate of the operation when it is indicated. Keywords: Dacryocystorhinostomy,
