By the help of a near infrared 840 nm diode laser light, OCT uses optical reflective properties of the tissues to provide detailed information about the internal retinal structures. Cross sectional OCT scans are color coded according to reflective properties of the retinal structures and provide quantitative information like real dimensions and reflectivity of the structures as well. Besides pathologies like macular edema, macular holes, epiretinal membrane, age related macular degeneration, optic nerve head drusen and optic disc pits, OCT can also be used in imaging of the anterior segment structures and in evaluation of the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness. As a high resolution imaging technique that is easily applicable and necessitating little patient compliance, OCT may have an important role in diagnosis and follow-up of a large variety of ophthalmological pathologies in future. Keywords: Tomography, Optical coherence tomography, Retinal tomography, Imaging techniquesTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2001, 10:34-40
