Objective: To assess the indications and feasibility of serum anti-Borrelia antibody titer evaluation in uveitis cases applying to a reference hospital in Turkey.
Institution: S.S.K. Ankara Eye Hospital, Ankara.
Materials and Methods: Between March and September 1997, uveitis patients with or without a known etiology who applied consecutively to our clinic were evaluated for Borrelia burgdorferi serum antibody titers with Lyme-ELISA test. Patients hospitalized for cataract or retinal detachment surgery without other ocular or systemic diseases served as controls.
Results: One hundred and twenty-four uveitis cases and 85 control subjects were studied. Serum B. burgdorferi IgM antibody titers were elevated in 12 (9.7%) uveitis cases, whereas IgG titers were negative. Of these cases, 6 (4.8%) were patients with anterior+posterior uveitis, who were previously diagnosed to have Behçet's disease, 5 (4.0%) had anterior+posterior uveitis without a known cause, and 1 (0.8%) was a patient with idiopathic anterior uveitis. In none of these patients the diagnosis of ocular Lyme Borreliosis could not be established according to the criteria of Centers for Disease Control.
Conclusion: In our clinic, which serves as a referal center for uveitis cases from all over the country, evaluation of these patients non-specifically for serum Lyme antibody titers was not thought to be necessary. In cases where other etiologic factors, especially Behçet's disease has been ruled out, in presence of other associated clinical findings, work-up for B. burgdorferi antibody titers could be reasonable. For healthy evaluation of the immunological tests, epidemiologic studies for Lyme disease are required in our country.
