Purpose: This study was undertaken to investigate efficacy and safety of a fibrinolytic agent, streptokinase, injected in the anterior chamber in the treatment of experimentally induced pupillary fibrin membrane.
Materials and Methods: Eighteen pigmented rabbits weighing 2000-2500 g were used in this study. One eye was assigned to the streptokinase, the other to the control group. Pupillary fibrin membrane was induced by administration of 0.2 ml citrated blood sample taken from ear vein. The eyes were evaluated by slit lamp examination and photographs taken 24 hours after the pupillary fibrin membrane. The test group was given 1000 IU/0.2 ml streptokinase into the anterior chamber while control group received no treatment. Severity of pupillar membrane was graded by slit lamp examination at 3, 6, 24, 48, 72 and 168 hours after the treatment. The animals were followed one week post-treatment in terms of intraocular pressure, corneal odema, inflammation of anterior chamber and and lens opacity.
Results: When the efficacy of streptokinase in the treatment of pupillary memrane was compared to the control group, statistically significant differences were found at 6 h (p<0.01), 24 h (p<0.001) and a week (p<0.01) after treatment. Side effects such as increased intraocular pressure, corneal edema, inflammation of the anterior chamber and lens opacity were not observed.
Conclusions: In this experimental pupillary fibrin membrane model, 1000 IU/0.2 ml streptokinase administered into the anterior chamber was found to be safe and efficient enough in the treatment of pupillary membrane.
