Purpose: To compare the results of dacryocystorhinostomy (DSR) and bicanalicular silicone tube intubation with DSR in nasolacrimal duct obstructions.
Methods: DSR was performed in 65 eyes of 61 patients with chronic dacryocystitis using Dupuy-Dutemps-Bourgeut technique, and DSR with bicanalicular silicone intubation was performed in 85 eyes of 78 patients between January 1995 - March 1998 at Atatürk University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology. The avarage follow up period was 19 months.
Results: The succes rate obtained in DSR was 92.3%, and in DSR with bicanalicular silicone tube intubation was 96.5%. Complications due to silicone tubing were observed as superior and inferior punctal erosion in 3 patients, conjunctival irritation and migration in inner canthus in 1 patient, and bilateral corneal opacification in another one.
Conclusion: Although there is no statistically significant difference between the succes rates, since the DSR with bicanalicular silicone tube application is effective against recurrences and does not require irrigation in postoperative period, it may be preferred. Meanwhile we think that it would be suitable to follow up patients especially during the first 3 months of postoperative period in order to prevent any complication due to silicone tubing. Keywords: Dacryocystorhinostomy, Silicone tubingTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2001, 10:61-64
