Göz Kliniği, Şefi, ANKARA Purpose: Scleroplasty with dura mater implantation is used for preventing further axial elongation of the globe in degenerative myopia. This study is planned in order to determine the effects of this technique on the axial length of the eye.
Material-Methods: 24 eyes of 14 children with degenerative myopia who underwent scleroplasty with dura mater implantation between 1994-1999 were prospectively reviewed. 30 eyes of 15 children with degenerative myopia were chosen as control group. In both groups, AXL differences pre and postoperatively were detected by A-scan ultrasonography. Patients were followed up for 46-60 (mean 51) months.
Results: Increase in AXL was statistically significantly lower in patient group compared to control group at 6th,12th and 24th months postoperatively (p<0.05). However; though increase in AXL was found lower in patient group at 36th and 48th months postoperatively, it was not found to be statistically significant (p>0.05).
Conclusion: It is concluded that; although scleroplasty in children with degenerative myopia is effective at the earlier stage, long term results showed that it is not effective on the prevention of axial elongation. Keywords: Degenerative myopia, Scleroplasty, Dura materTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2001, 10:102-107
