Methods: Ketorolac+trimethoprim-polymixin B drops (4x1) were administered to one eye and dexamethasone+ trimethoprim-polymixin B (4x1) to the fellow eyes of 20 patients for 15 days who had bilateral medial rectus recession. The patients were examined postoperatively on days 3, 7 and 15 to determine the degree of erythema, edema, secretion and wound healing, and were asked about the severity of pain experienced.
Results: Postoperative scores of erythema, edema and secretion were similar in both groups, whereas pain was statistically significantly less common in the eyes that recieved ketorolac tromethamine on days 3 and 7 (p= 0.03, p= 0.01). Conjunctival healing problem was not encountered in both groups.
Conclusions: Topical ketorolac tromethamine % 0.5, which is as efficacious as topical dexamethasone sodium phosphate % 0.1 in controlling postoperative inflammation, has the advantage of providing better analgesia and is a reliable alternative agent to corticosteroids in strabismus surgery. Keywords: Strabismus surgery, Postoperative inflammation, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents, CorticosteroidsTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2001, 10:72-77
