Various investigators have attempted to identify an exogenous cause to this disease, particularly a viral one. In the present study we investigated antibody titers of coxsackie viruses group B (CVB) in BD.
Method: The study groups included 20 (31.7%) patients who had active ocular involvement (group 1), 13 (20.6%) patients who had clinical evidence of previous ocular disease (group2), 30 (47.6%) patients without ocular involvement (group 3), and 30 healthy control subjects. Sera of the patients and control subjects were analysed by using microplate neutralisation test.
Results: There were no statistically significant differences between group 1, 2 and 3 for distrubition of CVB1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6 antibodies titers and no differences between group 1, 2, 3 and control group ( Kruskal-wallis ANOVA).
Conclusion: We conclude that CVB may not be responsible for pathogenesis of BD with or without ocular involvement. Keywords: Behçet's disease, coxsackie virus group B, uveitisTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2001, 10:83-87
