Materials and Methods: Eighthy three patients who underwent cataract surgery or secondary intraocular lens implantation in our clinic were enrolled in the study prospectively. 61 of these had double continuous, and 22 had single sutures. Patients were followed for three months and final astigmatism was noted using Nikon autorefractometer and sutures were removed as necessary, and best corrected visual acuity was determined.
Results: Sutures were removed in 89 ± 2 days from 40 (65.6%) double continous, and in 73 ± 3 days from 20 (90.9%) single suture patients. Astigmatism declined from -5.48 ±0.40 to -1.48 ± 0.15 in double continuous, and from -6.13 ± 0.66 to -1.40 ± 0.25 in single suture patients with no statistical difference in between groups; best corrected visual acuity was 0.78 ± 0.04 in the former, and 0.74 ± 0.05 in the latter group. Among patients who had no need for suture removal, best corrected visual acuity of double continuous, and single sutured patients were 0.85 ± 0.05, and 0.90 ± 0.10 respectively. Best corrected visual acuity of suture removed and non-removed patients were not statistically different from each other.
Conclusion: These two suture techniques have no difference from each other with respect to astigmatism both before and after suture removal. But since the need to remove sutures were less in the double continuous technique, it seems to be advantegous over the other. Keywords: Extracapsular cataract extraction, Astigmatism, SutureTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2001, 10:68-71
