Dr., Ankara SSK Göz Hastalıkları Merkezi ve Göz Bankası 1. Göz Kliniği, Şefi, ANKARA Purpose: In order to evaluate the results of inferior oblique myectomy for weakening of inferior oblique muscle overaction.
Material and Methods: The results of inferior oblique muscle distal myectomy in 93 eyes of 62 patients with inferior oblique overaction were evaluated retrospectively.
Results: After a 27.4 months follow-up, successful result was found in 87.1% of eyes whereas residual overaction was found in 12.9% of eyes. In patients with primary inferior oblique overaction, successful result was found in 88.9% of eyes whereas residual overaction was found in 11.1% of eyes. In patients whom underwent unilateral surgery for unilateral primary inferior oblique overaction, success rate was 72.7%. In patients whom underwent bilateral surgery for bilateral inferior oblique overaction, success rate was 90.4% while in all patients whom had bilateral asymetric primary inferior oblique overaction and had underwent unilateral surgery, contrlateral inferior oblique overaction had developed. In patients with secondary inferior oblique overaction, successful result was found in 83.3% of eyes and residual overaction was found in 16.7% of eyes.
Conclusion: Inferior oblique myectomy is safe, reliable and effective weakening procedure. In patients with unilateral inferior oblique overaction unilateral surgery is effective whereas unilateral surgery done in bilateral inferior oblique overaction may cause contrlateral inferior oblique overaction. Keywords: Inferior oblique overaction, Primary, Secondary, MyectomyTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2001, 10:121-127
