Purpose: To investigate the surgical techniques and results of eyelid reconstruction after tumor removal.
Institution: Ankara Numune Hospital 2. Eye Clinic.
Material and Methods: Twenty-one patients who had eyelid tumor excision and eyelid reconstruction between 1996 and 2000 were included in the study. Fifteen of the patients were male and 6 were female with a mean age of 57 years (32-90 years).
Results: The eyelid defect was partial in 8 eyelids and total in 13 eyelids. The tumor involved the upper eyelid in 4 patients, the lower eyelid in 12 patients, the lower eyelid and lateral canthal region in 1 patient, the medial canthal region in 2 patients and the upper eyelid and medial canthal region in 2 patients. One patient had malignant melanoma, one patient had sebaceous cell carcinoma, 2 patients had squamous cell carcinoma and 17 patients had basal cell carcinoma. The eyelid defect was reconstructed with primary suturation in 4 patients, local skin advancement flap in 2 patients, lateral canthotomy-cantholysis in 4 patients, periost flap in 1 patient, free tarsoconjunctival graft in 1 patient, Tenzel semicircular flap in 3 patients, inverted semicircular flap combined with medial forehead flap and local skin advancement flap in 2 patients, buccal mucosal graft combined with cheek transposition flap in 2 patients, and with retroauricular skin graft in 2 patients.
Conclusion: The excision of the eyelid tumors must be completed with clear surgical margins. The surgical technique which leeds to have better cosmetic and functional results must be chosen and this depends on the localization and extend of the defect.
