Materials and Methods: Fifty patients (age range; 15-36 years) that were seen in Strabismus department between January and May 2000 were included in the study and the answers of a survey with 14 questions about social life and psychological effects, were evaluated. For statistical analysis, chi-square and fisher-exact tests were used.
Results: Patients with strabismus expected that surgical treatment would correct their deviation and they preferred early operation. The majority of the patients reported that strabismus had no effect on their school and work conditions and relationships with the opposite sex and there was no significant difference between female and male subjects. Cases who reported adverse effects of strabismus interpreted themselves as pessimistic and introverted.
Conclusion: Even though in our country strabismus was seen as if it didn't affect the psychosocial situation adversely as it was expected, it can cause many problems in relationships in school and work. It should be kept in mind that surgical treatment of strabismus is not a cosmetic or functional treatment only but also achieves psychosocial improvement. Keywords: strabismus, psychosocial effect, cosmetic effect, surgical treatmentTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2001, 10:146-152
