Purpose: The purpose was to study the effects of inhaler steroids, used in the treatment of asthma, on intraocular pressure.
Setting: Kırıkkale University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology.
Materials and Methods: Fourty eyes of 20 cases, using fluticasone propionate, in the first group and 38 eyes of 19 cases, using budenosid, in the second group were involved in the study. The cases were selected to be consistent with the criteria of having no systemic disease to affect their intraocular eye pressures, no hypertension, no diabetes or no myopia, and having not used any topical, inhaler or systemic corticosteroid within one year, and no family history of glaucoma. Intraocular pressures of each case were measured both before beginning the treatment and in the first, third, sixth and twelveth months of the treatment.
Results: The cases in the first group were given 500 micrograms inhaler steroid per day and 400 micrograms inhaler steroid per day in the second group, and were followed up for an average of 11.73 ± 3.82 months. The intraocular pressures were statistically changed as from the sixth month in the first group and the twelveth month in the second group with respect to pre-treatment results (p<0.05). There was no statisticaly significant difference between the two groups (p>0.05). There was neither a decrease in visual acuity nor a difference in cup/disc rates in any of the cases.
Conclusion: According to these findings it can be concluded that the patients using inhaler steroids should be followed up very well particularly if they are having risk factors.
