Methods: IOP measurements with Goldman applanation tonometer were performed in sixty-five menstruating women and eighty-four physiologic menopausal women of the same age group. The groups were also divided as hypertensive and normotensive subgroups.
Results: The mean IOP in menopause group was higher than that in the menstruating group: Right (R): 15.44 mmHg, Left (L): 15.29 mmHg and R: 14.06 mmHg, L: 14.06 mmHg respectively (p<0.001). The mean IOP of normotensive menstruating and menopausal women were R: 13.20 ± 1.88 mmHg, L: 13.15 ± 1.89 mmHg and R: 15.18 ±2.62 mmHg, L: 15.00 ±2.40 mmHg respectively (p<0.001). The mean IOP of hypertensive menstruating and menopausal women were R: 15.44 ± 1.72 mmHg, L: 15.52±1.52 mmHg and R: 15.85 ±2.12 mmHg, L: 15.73 ±2.18 mm Hg respectively (p>0.05).
Conclusion: IOP in postmenopausal women without systemic hypertension was higher than that in menstruating women without systemic hypertension. Since the increase of IOP in hypertensive postmenopausal women in comparison to hypertensive menstruating women was not statistically significant, we concluded that menopause has no additive effect on IOP in hypertensive women. Further studies may reveal the mechanism of increase of IOP in menopause and may represent new therapeutic perspectives for primary open angle glaucoma in postmenopausal women. Keywords: Menopause, Intraocular pressure, Systemic hypertensionTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2001, 10:211-216
