Göz Kliniği, Şefi, ANKARA Purpose: 87 patients with infantile esotropia were evaluated in order to determine clinical characteristics and 80 of them were evaluated for the results of surgery.
Material-Methods: 87 patients examined between January 1992-September 1999 at Ankara SSK Eye Hospital. Refraction errors were corrected and amblyopia treatment was begun if necessary. During follow-ups, recession-resection or bimedial rectus recession surgery were performed on 80 patients and the results of each surgery were compared.
Results: Female/male ratio was nearly equal, median age at admission to our clinic was 5.97, and median age of surgery was 6.63. 94.25% of patients were hypermetropic, while 5.75 % of them had myopia. Associated findings were amblyopia, dissociated vertical deviation, inferior oblique overaction and nystagmus. In order to evaluate surgical results we reviewed patients in three age groups. There was no significant difference in the final surgical outcome between age groups operated with two different techniques, while reoperation rate was higher in the lately operated patients. Besides, subnormal binocular vision could be obtained less and residual squint was detected more with increasing surgery age. Postoperative final angle of deviation was lower among patients who had fusion than patients who had not.
Conclusion: Effects of two surgical techniques on the final horizontal deviation were not different between different age groups. But, subnormal binocular vision and fusion were difficultly obtained in patients whom were operated elderly. Because of this reason; surgery must be performed as soon as amblyopia treatment has completed and early referral of patients must be encouraged by the means of parents' education. Keywords: Infantile esotropia, Surgical method, Binocular visionTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2001, 10:222-229
