Materials and Methods: After a thorough ophthalmological examination of both eyes of 31 hypertensive patients and 21 healthy controls, peak systolic (Vmax), end-diastolic (Vmin), mean (Vmean) blood flow velocities, pulsatility (PI) and resistivity (RI) indices of ophthalmic (OA), central retinal (CRA) arteries and Vmean of central retinal vein were measured using CDU.Results: Simple HTR group included 43 eyes with either Grade 1 or 2 findings and severe retinopathy group included 19 eyes with either Grade 3 or 4 findings. OA Vmax results of both groups were increased and OA RI of the severe HTR group was decreased significantly when compared with the control (p<0.05). CRA Vmin, RI and PI results revealed significant difference between retinopathy groups (p<0.05).Conclusion: Although there is an increase in the blood flow velocities to some extent in the eyes with HTR, the results of CDU do not show correlation with the retinopathy severity. This study may indicate that CDU evaluation could not be an alternative method in evaluating the presence and grade of HTR and in estimating the probable consequences. Keywords: Hypertensive retinopathy, Color Doppler Ultrasonography, Ophthalmic artery, Central retinal arteryTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2002, 11:201-206
