Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the effects of different anaesthetic regimens of Thiopental-Isoflurane (TI), Thiopental-Sevoflurane (TS) and Propofol-Alfentanil (PA) on oculocardiac reflex (OCR) and postoperative nausea-vomiting (PNV) during strabismus surgery. Materials and Methods: Thirty nine patients aged between 4-12 years with ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologist) physical status I-II were included into the study and randomized to one of the three anaesthetic regimens. Group TI(n=13); Thiopental and isoflurane 1 MAC (minimum alveolar concentration) in 67% N20 and 33% 02, Group TS (n=13); Thiopental and sevoflurane 1 MAC in 67% N20 and 33% 02, and Group PA(n=13); Propofol and alfentanil infusion. The number of repaired muscles, OCR and applied therapy if needed, period of operation, the time of awareness and extubation, postoperative nausea and vomiting ratio were recorded. Results: There were no differences in terms of demographic characteristics and duration of the surgeries between three groups. OCR was seen in three patients of group TI (%23,1), in two patients of group TS (%15,4) and in four patients of group PA (%30,7) (p>0.05). In 66,6% of the cases, OCR was disappeared by means of warning of the surgeons. There were no differences in terms of PNV and needed for antiemetic therapy in the early and late postoperative period between three groups. Conclusion: It was concluded that the incidence of OCR, PNV and the need for antiemetic therapy in TI,TS, and PA anaesthetic regimens in strabismus surgery was similar. It was found that OCR was higher in PA type of anaesthesia than the other groups clinically.
