In group I (n: 20), a single dose of 0.03 mg/kg of midazolam and in group II (n: 20), a single dose of 0.5 mg/kg of pethidine were given intravenously. Measurements of IOP and oxygen saturation were taken at baseline and 2, 5, 10 and 15 minutes after sedation. After the operation patients were asked if they had remembered the peribulbar injection. Results: Compared with the baseline values, IOP was significantly lower in both groups 2, 5, 10 and 15 minutes after the administration of sedatives. Oxygen saturation decreased in 2, 5 and 10 minutes in group I and in 2 minutes in group II after the intravenous sedation. Oxygen saturation reached baseline levels in 15 minutes in-group I and in 5 minutes in group II after the intravenous sedation. Amnesia related to the peribulbar injection was significantly different among the groups. In group I 90 % and in group II 20 % of the patients amnesia. Conclusion: Intravenous sedation with low dose midazolam may be the drug of choice in particular because of its amnesic effect in cataract surgery. Keywords: Sedation, Midazolam, Pethidine, Amnesia, Intraocular pressureTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2002, 11:150-153
