Göz Kliniği Şefi, ANKARA Purpose: To evaluate the clinical findings and the effects of Duane's retraction syndrome on binocular vision. Material and Methods: Twenty-nine patients with Duane's retraction syndrome who were followed in our clinic between 1989 and 2001 were included in the study. Binocular vision was measured using Worth 4-dot (distant / near) test and Titmus test. Results: Eighteen of the patients (62 %) were female and 11 (38 %) were male. The mean age at presentation was 10 years (7/12 - 28 years). Twenty one patients had (72 %) left, 3 patients had (10.4 %) right and 5 patients had (17.2 %) bilateral Duane's retraction syndrome. Twenty-five patients had (86.2 %) type 1, and 4 had (13,8 %) type 3 Duane's retraction syndrome. Forty-eight point three percent of the patients had esotropia, 17.2 % had exotropia and 34.5 5% had orthotropia. Eighty-eight percent of the patients had some degree of binocular vision. Conclusion: Binocular vision may be reserved in patients with Duane's retraction syndrome because of orthotropia, small angled tropia or abnormal head posture. However, in some cases abnormal binocular vision may develop because of intermittant eye deviations. Keywords: Duane's Retraction Syndrome, Binocular vision, StereopsisTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2002, 11:146-149
