Methods: Visual fields of 36 eyes (19 patients) with low tension glaucoma compared with the same number of age- and visual acuity-matched primary open angle glaucoma eyes. Mean defects(MD) of the groups were similar. Octopus 101 perimeter and G2 program was used for their visual field examinations. Beside the MD and loss variance, we used three group of parameters: The sum of losses in central 5º area calculated from comparisons and corrected comparisons, delta analysis results (upper nasal MD, lower nasal MD, upper temporal MD, lower temporal MD, MD in 10º, 10-20º and 20-30º zones), and calculated derivatives which were obtained by division of these values with MD for each eye have been used in comparisons. Statistical analysis of results was performed with SPSS for Windows v. 6, using independent samples t test. Results: Mean ages were 49.22±11.09 and 51.42±9.81 years, and mean visual acuities were 0.86±0.19 and 0.85±0.18 in LTG and POAG groups, respectively. Groups were well-matched. Mean MD's were 7.83±3.37 db and 6.97±2.64 db and, mean LV's were 31.29±16.85 and 29.89±15.42 in LTG and POAG groups, respectively. The mean for the sum of defects in the central 5º area were 27.06±13.56 dB and 16.94±12.67 in LTG and POAG groups, respectively(p<0.002). Mean corrected losses in the same area were 16.00±13.37 dB and 8.82±9.70 dB in LTG and POAG groups respectively(p<0.02). The means for delta analysis parameters for LTG group and POAG group were as the following: Upper nasal MD, 8.48±4.1 db and 7.27±3.12 db, lower nasal MD, 7.71±4.08 db and 7.06±3.12 db, upper temporal MD, 7.84±3.51 db and 7.53±3.37 db, lower temporal MD, 7.09±4.42 db and 6.04±2.91 db, respectively. Mean MD in central 10º zone were 5.66±2.48 db and 5.0±2.64 db for LTG and POAG groups. Mean MD in 10-20º zone were 7.15±3.79 and 5.53±2.13 db for LTG and POAG groups. Mean MD in 20-30º zone were 9.48±4.34 and 8.89±3.83 db for LTG and POAG groups. Among these comparisons, only the difference in 10-20 degree zone found statistically significant(p=0.028). The comparisons among calculated derivatives showed no significant differences.
Conclusion: Eyes with low tension glaucoma seem to have different visual field characteristics in some aspects from the ones with primary open angle glaucoma. Keywords: Low tension glaucoma, Primary open angle glaucoma, Visual fieldsTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2002, 11:117-121
