Investigation Of The Effect Of Smoking On The Ocular Blood Flow By Using Color Dupplex Doppler Ultrasonography

Materials and Methods: Sixty-six cases were included to the study. Thirty-two smokers were asked to refrain from smoking for at least 6 hours before the study. The color dupplex Doppler imaging was used to measure the peak systolic, the end diastolic flow velocity and resistivity index of the opthalmic artery, central retinal artery and posterior ciliary artery in 32 smokers and 34 nonsmokers. Results: Both the peak systolic and the end diastolic flow velocity were decreased, and the resistivity index was increased in the opthalmic artery, central retinal artery and posterior ciliary artery in smokers when compared with nonsmokers. Between these two groups, changes of the peak systolic flow velocity, the end diastolic flow velocity and resistivity index in the central retinal artery and changes of the diastolic flow velocity and resistivity index in the posterior ciliary artery were statistically significant.Conclusion: It was detected that smoking reduced ocular blood flow in chronic smokers by color duplex Doppler ultrasonography. This finding may be more important for cases with eye disease which is related to altered blood flow such as diabetes, glaucoma, anterior ischemic optic neuropathy or temporal arteritis.Keywords: Ocular blood flow, Smoking, Color duplex Doppler ultrasonographyTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2002, 11:141-145
