Şefi, ANKARA Purpose: To compare the suppresion of inflammation and elevation of intraocular pressure in patients having anterior üveitis who are threated with topical rimexolone 1% and dexamethasone 0.1%.Method: Twenty patients with active anterior uveitis were randomly divided into two groups. One group (10 patients) received topical rimexolone 1% and the other group (10 patients) received topical dexamethasone 0.1%.Topical theraphy was as follows: One drop every hour during the first week, one drop every two hours during the second week, four times a day during the third week, two times a day for four days. Patients were examined on days 1,4,7,14,21 and 28. A poststudy evaluation was made 36 to 72 hours after treatment was stopped. On each visit anterior chamber cell and flare, keratic precipitates, ciliary flush, photophobia, discomfort and intraocular pressure were noted. Results: Rimexolone 1% was found to be as effective as dexamethasone 0.1% in the supression of anterior chamber cell and flare for each visit. The effects of both medications on keratic precipitates, ciliary flush, photophobia and discomfort were similar and there were no statistically significant differences between them. When intraocular pressure effects of both medications were compared, dexamethasone 0.1%was found, statistically significant, higher than rimexolone 1% on days 14 and 21.Conclusion: Rimexolone 1% and dexamethasone 0.1% have similar effects on the control of anterior segment inflammation. Intraocular pressure raising potential is one of the most important side effects seen during theraphy. Rimexolone 1% is safer than dexamethasone 0.1% especially in suspectible patients. Keywords: Anterior Uveitis, Rimexolone 1%, Dexamethasone 0.1%Turkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2002, 11:97-103
