Göz Kliniği, Klinik Şefi, ANKARA This study aimed to investigate the neurogenic etiology of patients with paralytic strabismus and to detect the role of etiological classification and clinical findings on early diagnosis. One hundred patients with 3rd, 4th, 6th cranial nerve palsy were retrospectively evaluated. The orthoptic and ophthalmologic findings were recorded and detailed past history were also taken about trauma and systemic pathologies. Patients were categorized depends on the age, lateralite and etiological factors. The etiologies were grouped as congenital, trauma, neoplasm, aneurism, vascular and others.Sixth nerve palsy was the first common (%41) ocular motor nerve palsy. The vascular reasons were the most common for 3rd and 6th cranial palsies, although idiopathic and traumatic reasons were the most common for 4th cranial and multiple ocular motor palsies, respectively.A comprehensive clinical evaluation is essential for the differential diagnosis of the etiology of paralytic strabismus and early diagnosis will prevent unnecessary neuroradiological investigations. Keywords: Ocular motor nerve palsy, Third nerve palsy, Fourth nerve palsy, Sixth nerve palsyTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2002, 11:93-96
