EMLA cream and alfentanil were applied to 20 cases of the first and the second group. Twenty cases of the third group were considered as controls. Pain during peribulbar injection was assessed by objective means and Visual Analogue Scale. Results: The objective pain reactions in alfentanil and EMLA cream applied to the patients were similar and low (p>0,05). There was a statistical difference between alfentanil applied group and the control (p<0,05); whereas there wasn't a significant difference between the EMLA cream applied group and the control (p>0,05). The pain scores in both groups for Visual Analogue Scale were similar and significantly lower compared to those of the controls (p<0,05).Conclusion: Alfentanil and EMLA cream were found to be effective in reducing pain caused by peribulbar block. Keywords: Peribulbar block, EMLA cream, AlfentanilTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2002, 11:81-85
