Amniotic membrane may show its effect by acting as a biological contact lens, or as a basal membrane, by promoting healing or epithelial cell growth via several growth factors and cytokines, and by inhibiting inflammation and fibrosis. Amniotic membrane transplantation is being used in persistent epithelial defects, chronic phase of chemical burns, pterygium surgery, and in conjunctival defects. In recent years amniotic membrane is being used for the expansion of limbal stem cells in ex vivo environment, and in partial or total limbal stem cell deficiency it has been used alone or in combination with limbal stem cell transplantation. Keywords: Amniotic membrane, Limbal stem cells, Persistent epithelial defectsTürkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2003, 12:227-236
