Materials and Methods: Forty patients who were followed-up for severe smoking-induced COPD were evaluated for ocular findings. We noted the ocular findings and compared with the control group which included 40 age and sex-matched, healthy, non-smoking subjects by statistical methods. The relation of cigarette smoking and medications used for COPD with ocular findings were evaluated.
Results: All patients in the COPD group were chronic smokers for more than 20 years. The mean age was 62 years old in COPD patients and 60 years old in the control group (p>0.05). The most common ocular finding was cataract which was seen in 16 of 40 (40%) cases with COPD (p<0.05). The second most common ocular finding was atherosclerotic changes in retinal vessels (35%). Cataract was found in two of 12 cases with COPD who used nasal inhalar corticosteroids and this was not statistically significant compared to the control group (p>0.05).
Conclusion: Cataract is the major ocular complication in patients with cigarette smoking-induced severe COPD. These cases should be evaluated for the ocular findings in their routine controls. Keywords: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD),Tobacco, Ocular findings, CataractTürkiye Klinikleri Oftalmoloji 2003, 12:200-203
