Case Report: Six-years-old girl with severe visual acuity loss in both eyes was accepted in our outpatient department. In ophthalmologic examination, her acuities were meas-ured as from hand movements in right eye and from couting fingers at 0.2 meters. Anterior segment exami-nation was insignificant. The temporal portion of the op-tic disc becomes pale in both eyes. Her neurology, he-matology and infectious disease consultations were per-formed. Large atipic lymphocytes with exantrically-placed nüclei were seen in periferic blood. IgM and IgG antibodies for EBV-VCA was (+). The patient was diag-nosed as infectious mononücleosis and visual symptoms were estimated as EBV-related optic neuritis.
Conclusion: Epstein-Barr virus should be considered in dif-ferential diagnosis of optic neuritis in children. Keywords: Optic neuritis, Epstein-Barr virusTürkiye Klinikleri Oftalmoloji 2003, 12:161-164
