Göz Kliniği Şefi, ANKARA Objective: To evaluate the observed during intraroperative and postoperative complications in patients who under-went phacoemulsification.
Material and Methods: Eight hundred seven eyes of 850 cases who had cataract extraction by phacoemulsification in our clinic, between November 98 and May 2002 were included in the study. Presence of intraoperative and postoperative complications were evaluated.
Results: Vitreous loss in 58 eyes (6,8%), posterior capsular tear without vitreous loss in 9 eyes (1%), nuclear drop into vitreous in 8 eyes (0,9%), iris injury in 9 eyes (1%), corneal burn in 2 eyes (0.2%), suprachoroidal hemor-rhage in 1 eye (0.1%) were encountered as intraoperative complications. Postoperative complications were as fol-lows; corneal oedema in 40 eyes (4.7%), posterior cap-sular fibrosis in 16 eyes (1,8%), retained cortex material in 11 eyes (1,2%), pupillary irregularity in 7 eyes (0,8%), malposition of intraocular lens in 6 eyes (0.7%), cystoid macular oedema in 6 eyes (0,7%), intraocular pressure rise in 2 eyes (0,2%), endophthalmitis in 2 eyes (0,2%) bullous keratopathy in 1 eye (0,1%).
Conclusion: Although there are some intraoperative and postoperative complications in phacoemulsification sur-gery, it is a close and safer system, and it should be the preferred surgical method in the treatment of cataract. Since it is a safer technique due to closed system sur-gery.Keywords: Phacoemulsification, Complications, Posterior capsular tear.Türkiye Klinikleri Oftalmoloji 2003, 12:151-156
