Material ve Method: Between 1997?2001, Charts of 53 cases (totaly 75 eyes) who underwent surgical procedur because of inferior oblique muscle overaction, were retrospectively re-viewed. Primary inferior oblique muscle overaction was found in 86.8% cases whereas secondary overaction was found in 13.2% cases. All patients have been followed up different four groups according to performed surgical proce-dure.
Results: There was statistically difference (p<0.001) between preoperatively and postoperatively inferior oblique muscle overaction grade's in the four groups which were inferior oblique muscle tenotomy, inferior oblique muscle tenotomy combined with distal muscle resection,,inferior oblique muscle tenotomy combined with horizontal muscle sur-gery,inferior oblique muscle tenotomy combined with distal muscle resection and horizontal muscle surgery. No patient had surgical complications including adherence syndrome.
Conclusion: The same results were obtained in the patients who underwent inferior oblique muscle tenotomy combined distal muscle resection while pre-operatively overaction grade was higher than the patients who underwent classi-cal tenotomy. Thus, adding distal muscle resection to clas-sical tenotomy could exibited satisfactory results in the patients who had high grade inferior oblique muscle over-action.Keywords: Inferior oblique muscle overaction, Inferior oblique muscle tenotomy, Distal muscle resection, Adherence syndromeTürkiye Klinikleri Oftalmoloji 2003, 12:145-150
