Materials and Methods: One hundred and twenty-eight patients (161 eyes) who underwent strabismus surgery were included. Periph-eral retinal examination was performed in all cases following bilateral pupillary dilaton. The examiner was masked to the data of the previous strabismus surgery. Sex, refractive status (as spherical equivalant), type of deviation, age at the time of sur-gery, laterality, type and amount of the surgical procedure, type of suture material used, experience of the surgeon and the use of operation microscope were recorded from old records.
Results: Chorioretinal alterations were noted in 11 of 246 (4.4%) muscle procedures performed in 161 eyes of 128 patients. All alterations were retinal pigment epithelial hypertrophy at about the site of muscle reattachment. No case of chorioretinal scar-ring unique to frank globe perforation was identified. Ten of 11 (90.9%) chorioretinal alterations were noted in eyes underwent horizontal muscle recession (7 lateral rectus, 3 medial rectus) and the other in the eye underwent lateral rectus resection. Cho-rioretinal alterations were noted in 11.5% (8/ 69) of the proce-dures in which operation microscope was not used, and in 1.6% of the procedures (3/ 177) in which operation microscope was used. It was demonstrated that the incidence of chorioretinal al-terations increased with residents operating. Besides, it was found that type of suture material and/ or needle type used af-fected the incidence of chorioretinal alterations. Chorioretinal alterations were noted in 6 of 46 procedures (13%) in which 5.0 katgüt was used, and in 5 of 200 procedures (2.5%) in which 6.0 polyglactin with spatulated needles was used.
Conclusion: Our results indicate that the incidence of chorioretinal alterations are lower with the use of operation microscope and modern suture material and with experienced surgeons operat-ing. Besides, we determined that chorioretinal alterations are more common in lateral rectus recession. These facts should be kept in mind when performing strabismus surgery. Keywords: Chorioretinal scar formation, Globe perforation, Strabismus surgeryTürkiye Klinikleri Oftalmoloji 2003, 12:128-132
