The age of patients varied between 40 and 81. Bacterial growth was studied in 176 conjunctival specimens of 88 patients. Specimens were evaluated for growth of bacteria on blood agar plate, EMB agar, and chocolate agar plate for 24-48 hours at 37 degrees C. Methicillin resistance was confirmed by disk diffusion methods with Mueller Hilton Agar on oxacillin disc (1mg). Susceptibilities of bacterial strain to Penicillin (P), ofloxacin (OFX), ciprofloxacin (CIP), norfloxacin (NOR), fucidic acid (FA), oxacillin (OX), gentamicin (CN), co-trimaxasol (SXT) and vancomycin (VA) were determined by the disk diffusion method according to National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standarts (NCCLS).Results: Of the 88 patients (176 eyes), 108 eyes (61%) had positive bacterial growth. Among them 3 (6 eyes) had MRSA growth and 9 (18 eyes) had MRCNS growth. 32 eyes had methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA). 48 eyes had methicillin-sensitive Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci (MSCNS). Of the 6 eyes with MRSA, 4 (65%) were resistant to OFX, CN and NOR. Of the 18 eyes with MRCNS, 10 (55 %) were resistant to CIP, NOR and OFX. Conclusion: Positive bacterial growth was found in 61% of the patients. The present findings indicate that MRSA and MRCNS, which are pathogen bacteria and one of the causative agents of postoperative endophthalmitis, exist in conjunctivae without any symptoms or signs of infection. It is important to be aware that about half of elderly patients who are candidates for cataract surgery may have bacterial growth on the conjunctiva and may be carriers of MRSA or MRCNSKeywords: Healthy conjunctiva, conjunctival flora, Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureusTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2003, 12:70-75
