The Comparison Of The Endoscopic And External Dacryocystorhinostomy Procedures With Silicone Stent Implantation

Objective: To compare the endoscopic and external dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) procedures in cases with chronic dacryocystitis who were implanted with silicone stent.
Material and Methods: Patients with the diagnosis of primary chronic dacryocystitis were included in the study and evaluated in two groups. In the first group, 27 patients were operated with endoscopic DCR, and in the second group 27 patients had classical external DCR. Intraoperatively silicone stent was implanted in all patients. The groups were compared for the features of the patients, complications, and success rates.
Results: Age range of patient was between 20 and 78 years (mean 48,6± 17 years). No statistically significant difference was observed between the groups for the ages and follow-up time. The mean duration of silicone stent intubation was 5.2± 1.7 months in the first and 5.4± 1.7 months in the second groups, and the difference for the intubation time was insignificant as well. The success rate was 88.9% in the endoscopic DCR group and 92.6% in the external DCR group. The difference between groups was statistically insignificant (p=0.639).
Conclusion: Although the success rate with silicone stent entubation in endoscopic DCR group was less than the external DCR group, the difference was statistically insignificant. This suggests that with silicone stent implantation the success of endoscopic DCR is comparable to external DCR procedures.Keywords: Dacryocystitis, dacryocystorhinostomy, endoscopy, silicone stentTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2004, 13:199-204
