Material and Methods: 18 consecutive patients with epithelial herpetic keratitis were enrolled into a prospective study. The patients were randomly assigned to two treatment groups. First group of 10 patients treated by the combined debridement and acyclovir therapy was compared with second group of eight patients treated by acyclovir alone, considering the epithelial healing time and the course of visual acuity.
Results: Epithelial healing and visual acuity recovery time were (mean± SD) 5.1± 1.4 days and 13.6± 3.6 in combined therapy group, 12.3± 4.7 days and 26.4± 13.6 days in the acyclovir therapy group respectively.
Conclusion: The combination of debridement and acyclovir produced a significantly more rapid epithelial healing and visual acuity recovery rate than did acyclovir alone (p<0.0001, p=0.0005 respectively). Keywords: Herpes, keratitis, debridement, acyclovirTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2004, 13:193-198
