aGöz Hastalıkları AD, Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, İZMİR Objective: To evaluate the results of automated perimetry, central corneal thickness (CCT), contrast sensitivity and Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue test in Ocular Hypertension (OHT) and compare these results with those of normal population.
Material and Methods: Twenty-five patients examined at Department of Ophthalmology, Dokuz Eylul University School of Medicine between January 1999 and April 2003 and diagnosed to have OHT and 25 healthy volunteers were included in the study. After a thorough ophthalmologic examination, Humphrey blue-on-yellow (B-Y) and white-white (W-W) perimetry were performed to both the study and control groups at the initial visit. After eighteen months , two groups were compared by means of Humphrey automated perimetry, CCT, contrast sensitivity and Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue colour test results.
Results: At the initial visit, B-Y perimetry parameters were as follows in OHT group: Mean Deviation (MD):-2.93±0,62, Pattern Standard Deviation (PSD):3.48±0,88, Short Time Fluctation (SF):2.94±0.76. The W-W perimetry parameters of the same group were as follows; MD:-1.44±0.50, PSD:2.06±0,81, SF:1.9±0.62. In the control group B-Y perimetry parameters were; MD:-3.61±0.54, PSD:3.72±0.71, SF:2.4±0.43, W-W perimetry parameters were MD:-1.68±0.48, PSD:2.0±0.74, SF:1.84±0.42. Two patients were excluded from the OHT group since they underwent glaucomatous progression. After eighteen months, in OHT group, B-Y perimetry, parameters were MD:?4.95±0.72, PSD: 3.72±0.53, SF:2.34±0.41. W-W perimetry results were; MD:-1.63±0.37, PSD:2.14±0.57, SF:2.86±0.63. In the control group B-Y perimetry parameters were; MD: -4.81±0.56, PSD: 3,94±0.45, SF:2.6±0.51, and W-W perimetry parameters were; MD:-1.66±0.32, PSD: 2.21±0.44, SF:1.78±0.26. No statistically significant difference could be detected between the groups except MD results in B-Y perimetry (p>0.05). In addition to perimetry, two groups were evaluated with CCT (Orbscan II), contrast sensitivity (VCI Vision Contrast Test System) and with Farnworth Munsell 100 Hue colour test. No statistically signicificant difference could be detected between the two groups with regard to CCT (568±23,3 µm in OHT group, 526±26,2 µm in control group) and contrast sensivity despite lower contrast sensitivities in all spatial frequencies in OHT group. In Farnsworth Munsell 100 Hue test, no difference was present at red-green axis, but Total Error Scors (TES) and Blue-Yellow Axis (BYA) error scors were significantly higher in OHT group.
Conclusion: MD parameter of the B-Y perimetry seems to be more sensitive for the follow up of OHT. Although higher BYA error scores and lower contrast sensitivity levels are detected in the OHT group, more studies are needed to decide the predictive values of these tests. Keywords: Contrast Sensitivity , blue on yellow perimetry, ocular hypertension , 100 hue testTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2004, 13:185-192
