aGöz Hastalıkları AD, bKBB Hastalıkları AD, Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, İZMİR Objective: To determine the outcome of our treatment in patients with nasolacrimal duct obstruction and review the therapeutic strategy.Material and Methods: We have retrospectively evaluated 54 patients (72 eyes) treated from September 1998 to April 2001 at the pediatric ophthalmology service of Dokuz Eylül University Eye Clinic. The mean age at first examination was 7.98 month. According to symptoms and age, patients were treated with antibiotic therapy, massage, probing under general anesthesia, silicon tube intubation or dacryocystorhinostomy. Result: Forty six of 52 eyes (88.4%) under 12 months of age recovered with topical antibiotic therapy and massage. The success rate was 66.6% for the first probing and 85.7% for the second. The overall success rate was 91.7%. Silicon intubation was indicated and performed in 4 eyes. Two ducts remained obstructed after silicon intubation and underwent a successful dacryocystorhinostomy. All patients became asymptomatic at the end of the follow-up.Conclusion: In this study a step-by-step approach for the management of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction resulted in a successful outcome. We believed that probing with nasal endoscopy especially in second probing increased the success rate in patients with congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Keywords: Congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction, probing, intubation, dacryocystorhinostomyTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2004, 13:159-164
