Göz Kliniği, S.B.Haydarpaşa Numune Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, İSTANBUL Objective: To compare the presence of fusion and stereopsis in strabismic and anisometropic amblyopia and to evaluate the relation with the depth of amblyopia, the degree of anisometropia, and the angle of deviation.
Materials and Methods: 58 strabismic and 78 anisometropic amblyopic patients were studied. The best corrected visual acuities were determined by using Snellen chart. Angle of deviation was evaluated with prism cover test. The degree of anisometropia was determined by calculating the difference between spherical equivalents for each eye. Patients were classified into groups by the angle of deviation, and the degree of anisometropia . Fusion was evaluated with Worth's four- dot test and Bagolini lenses. Stereopsis was assessed by Titmus test.
Results: The best corrected visual acuity levels were higher in anisometropic group than in strabismic group (p= 0.021). Stereoacuity levels were significantly different between the two groups (p= 0.009). Stereopsis was not detected in 19 (%32.8) patients of strabismic amblyopia group and in 11 (%14.1) patients of anisometropic amblyopia group. Stereoacuity was better than 60 sec/arc in 1 (%1.7) strabismic and 10 (%12.8) anisometropic patients (p= 0.019). The depth of amblyopia was strongly and positively correlated with the angle of deviation and the degree of anisometropia (r=0,404; p=0,002; p<0,01 ; and r=0,502; p=0,0001; p<0,001 , respectively). The positive fusion responses were significantly more in anisometropic patients than in strabismic patients (p= 0.0001). Central fusion were found to be better protected in anisometropic amblyopia than in strabismic amblyopia (p= 0.0004).
Conclusion: The visual acuity, stereopsis and fusion were found to be better in anisometropic amblyopia than in strabismic amblyopia . The angle of deviation and the level of anisometropia correlate well with fusion and stereopsis. Keywords: Amblyopia, strabismus, anisometropia, fusion, stereopsisTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2004, 13:117-123
