aElazığ Devlet Hastanesi,bFırat Üniversitesi Fırat Tıp Merkezi, ELAZIĞ Objective: To investigate the relationship between serum leptin level and diabetic macular edema in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy.Material and Methods: Fifteen patients with and without diabetic macular edema respectively and fifteen healthy volunteers with similar demografic features were attended in this study. The routine ophthalmological examination and fundus floresscein angiography were performed in all patients. The patients were divided into three groups; the group with macular edema, the group without macular edema and the control group. The levels of serum leptin were measured and evaluated in all patients .Results: The mean serum leptin levels were 4.9±1.3 ng/ml in the control group, 26.0±8.1 ng/ml in the group with macular edema and 19.1±6.8 ng/ml in the group without macular edema. The serum leptin levels in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy were significantly higher compared to the control group ( p <0.05).Conclusion: It was concluded that leptin levels increased in macular edema and its elevations might be related to inflamation. Keywords: Diabetic retinopathy, macular edema, leptinTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2004, 13:165-169
